PRACTICAL TEST

The Driving Test lasts about 40 minutes and includes driving out of town on fast roads, such as dual carriageways, up to 70 mph. You will be asked to do 1 out of 3 possible reversing manoeuvres (turning in the road, reversing around a corner and reverse parking), with one third of tests also carrying out an emergency stop.  You will also be asked to drive independently for a period of 10 minutes.

In order to pass, you must not make any serious or dangerous faults, although you are allowed to have up to 15 minor faults. Don't worry! It is not that difficult, and examiners are very friendly. They know what it is like having to drive under pressure, and they really are on your side.

The driving test includes two questions about the routine safety checks (Show Me/Tell Me questions) you should do on your car, to ensure it is safe to drive.

Booking your Driving Test

Telephone bookings can be made directly to the Driving Standards Agency on
0300 200 1122 or you can book online at www.direct.gov.uk/drivingtest

You should quote your instructor's ADI number when making a booking, so that the DSA do not schedule two tests for the same instructor at the same time.

The current fee is £62.00 for a weekday test, but may be changed from time to time by the DSA.

Wait time for tests is about 8 weeks, and you can only apply once you have passed the theory test.

What do I need to take?

Both parts of your Driving Licence.
Photo ID (e.g. your passport) if you have the older type of paper licence.
Your theory certificate.
